Action Alert: Senate Revisists Paper Trail Bill! |
Thursday, April 5, 2007
Dear paper trail supporter:
The Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs (EHEA) Committee
revisited SB392 yesterday and amended the bill again. These new
amendments will ensure that any new voting system certified for use in
Maryland must include a voter verified paper record. As amended,
SB392 would require the use of optically-scanned paper ballots and
paper ballots created by ballot-marking devices. These amendments
effectively ban the use of paperless voting machines and enable the
State to conduct meaningful recounts. We believe that the amendments
are a significant move forward in the effort to restore voters’
confidence in our voting system.
We call on all our members to tell their state Senators to vote YES to SB392 when it comes to the
Senate floor for a full vote. We do not know when it will come for a
full vote given the large number of bills that have to be addressed.
Therefore, please inform your Senator that you support the bill that
was reported favorably out of Committee.

With only three days left in the 2007 legislative session, there are
still many hoops that our legislation must go through in order for the
bill to sit on the Governor’s desk for his signature. Please call your
Senator today and tell him/her
that you support the current version of SB392.
Thank you for your commitment during this critical time. After four
years of hard work, we are laying the foundation needed to ensure that
Maryland elections are conducted with accuracy, transparency and
integrity.
Sincerely,
Shazia N. Anwar
