Don't let politics get in the way of verifiable elections |
It was very encouraging to see the Columbia Flier come out forcefully
in support of a paper record of our votes ("Election security worth
some extra expense," editorial, March 9). We can anticipate a number of
very close raises this year, in both the primary and general elections.
If a recount were necessary, the current Diebold AccuVote system would
provide no paper record of the vote. The nation will be watching Maryland's race for governor and U.S.
senator this fall. It is important that we be able to justify the
outcome of our election.
I hope that the newspaper's support for a paper ballot will encourage the state Senate to pass this important legislation.
It may also interest you to know that Diebold Corp. has a link to state
Senate President Mike Miller. His former aide, John Stierhoff, is now a
Diebold representative.
It would be unfortunate if voters were left with the impression that
Democratic ties to this corporate behemoth were the reason that
important legislation was not brought to a vote.
