TrueVoteMD Calls for Public Inquiry by Duncan |

and County Council into
Apparent Violations of Election Law
by County Elections

today called on Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan and County Council
President George Leventhal to immediately initiate an open, public inquiry into
possible violations of Maryland Election Law by the Montgomery County Board of
Elections. In a letter addressed to
both County officials, the election integrity group outlined how recently
released documents, (correspondence between the State Board of Elections and
Diebold Corporation), admit the use of an uncertified voting system in the March
2004 Primary election.
Maryland Election Law prohibits the use of
uncertified voting systems. The letter calls on County officials to determine
the extent of knowledge of the local Board of Elections in this use an
uncertified voting system.
“What did our local BOE, Administrators and
technical staff know about the use of uncertified systems? Why was the public
not informed about this risky action during a presidential primary and at a time
when the MD General Assembly was considering requiring a voter-verified paper
audit trail,” said Bob Ferraro, Co-Founder of TrueVoteMD.
The call for a
public inquiry follows upon TrueVoteMD’s release, last Thursday, March 09, 2006,
of more than 200 pages of internal State Board of Elections (SBE)
documents.
“We trying to find public officials anywhere in the state
that care about upholding Maryland election law. They are hard to come by but
we hope Montgomery County might be the place,” said Executive Director Linda
Schade. "The voters of Montgomery County need reassurance that our Board of
Elections will abide by all Maryland Election Laws and inform the public of all
problems with the election system that could affect the accurate recording and
counting of votes.”
