Tell Your State Delegate to Co-Sponsor HB 244! |
On January 23 rd 2006 Delegate Sheila Hixson sponsored HB 244
a piece of legislation mandating Voter Verified Paper Ballot and
Audit Trail. This bill already has a lot of support, but we need you to
write your delegates today and encourage them to co-sponsor HB 244.

Dear Delegate __________,
Please
co-sponsor HB 244, which requires voter-verified paper records for
our electronic voting system. All voters and candidates want an
election system we can trust. 33 other states have this important
safeguard and Maryland's HB244, sponsored by Delegate Hixson, and would
provide some of the strongest election protections to date in the
nation.
HB244 also requires mandatory audits to compare the
paper record to the machine count. Any discrepancy would alert election
workers to a problem requiring further investigation.
Our
elections deserve to be conducted in an open, honest and transparent
manner. A Voter-Verified Paper Trail will allow me to ensure that my
vote is recorded accurately, would check our voting machines to ensure
that they are working properly, and would allow for meaningful audits
and recounts in the instances where an election result is disputed.
The
federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently issued a report
warning of serious flaws in electronic voting systems. The simple
solution of adding a paper trail has been recommended by the
nonpartisan (Jimmy) Carter- (James) Baker Commission and interest
groups from all sides of the political spectrum. These safeguards will
allow for more public trust in our electoral process.
I hope that will you support and co-sponsor this bill.
Sincerely, |
