State lawmakers are considering bills to require the paper backup, and the issue is shaping up to be among the biggest of the 2004 election season both in Maryland and across the country. TrueMajority.org, a nationwide grassroots group with more than 8,000 members in Maryland, and TrueVoteMD, a Maryland-based citizen's network, are teaming up in a joint campaign to increase the pressure on lawmakers to listen to those pro-paper voices. Ben Cohen, the familiar face on millions of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream cartons, will announce a hard hitting full-page newspaper ad calling on state lawmakers to require a paper trail. Mr. Cohen and Linda Schade of TrueVoteMD will also talk about next steps in the Maryland campaign. They will be joined by Maryland Delegate Karen Montgomery, the sponsor of a pending House Ways & Means bill to require a voter-verified paper trail, and TrueVoteMD computer security expert Paul Suh.
