Advocates for Voter Verification to Educate Voters, Protest Machines and Monitor Voting
November 4, 2003
Montgomery County: The Campaign for Verifiable Voting in Maryland will be standing in front of voting precincts in Maryland to protest the use of unverifiable electronic voting machines. Members of the Campaign will be handing out literature and urging voters to protest the inability of machines to verify their vote. "While these new electronic voting machines will be easy for voters to use, voters will never know whether the vote they cast was actually how the vote was counted," said Bob Ferraro, a co-director of the Campaign for Verifiable Voting. "The only way to be sure our votes are counted as we intended is for voters to be able to verify their ballot before it is cast and create a paper trail. The paper trail will allow random audits to check the accuracy of the machines and allow for a recount if necessary." Linda Schade, also a co-director of the Campaign said "If election officials are unable to verify that my vote was counted the way I intended, I will file a formal complaint with election officials. My hope is to raise public awareness of the threat touch screen voting machines pose to the integrity of our election process and force public officials to face the mounting evidence of the vulnerability of these machines." The Campaign for Verifiable Voting of Maryland has been writing letters to members of the Board of Elections, Governor and legislators since last Monday. In two weeks 370 people from around he state have sent over 3,000 letters to public officials responsible for purchasing the unverifiable voting machines. Media interested in photographing or videoing the educational protest should contact the Campaign for Verifiable Voting at 301-270-6150 or 703-981-3619 to get times and locations.
