Click here to sign the Paper Ballots Now petition!! The
election meltdown in Maryland's primary has now made the failures of
electronic voting undeniable. The most responsible emergency step
required to prevent further chaos and uncertainty in the November
General Election is to give Maryland citizens the option of voting on paper ballots.
This
means the new Diebold electronic pollbooks
and voting machines should be put aside and instead voters should be
‘checked-in’ using the paper-based registration list and allowed to
vote on a paper ballot (this is NOT an endorsement for the increased
use of provisional ballots). Please
sign the "Paper Ballots Now" petition and send a message to your
elected officials that by acting quickly they can improve voter
confidence and ensure that the General Election results are fully
verifiable. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

More tomorrow but Maryland voters were disenfranchised due to technical problems... (new electronic pollbooks and statewide voter database). Technical failures were made worse by the fact that our Election Board has refused to implement a simple policy of providing enough paper ballots for voters in each precinct so they can vote when the system is down. We've been advocating for this common sense back up for two years. Major problems: Montgomery County precinct openings were delayed by 45 minutes to three hours because machine boot-up cards were missing from an estimated 180 precincts. This and technical problems with the new e-pollbooks ('replacing' check-in judges) caused some judges to give voters provisional paper ballots. We heard many reports of precincts out of paper ballots causing untold numbers of voters to give up and leave without casting ballots. Delays were so widespread that Montgomery and BAltimore polls were kept open an hour extra - til 9pm. However, Greg Smith reports that at Piney Branch Elementary School in Takoma Park, resourceful election judges had to READ THE LIST OF CANDIDATES out load while voters wrote their selections ON SCRAPS OF PAPER. System Cost: over $100 million. Write Comment (0 Comments) |

How Should We Respond to Concerns About Election Integrity? The simple answer to this question is: By becoming involved in securing and verifying our election system. It is, of course, more complicated than that. We have varying degrees of understanding of how the election system works and we have limited hours to devote to this effort. Most activists agree that Congressman Rush Holt's bill in the House of Representatives, HR550, would provide an important first step. It would mandate (1) that election systems provide a paper record of our ballots and (2) that an automatic audit, of a certain percentage of precincts in each county, be preformed to verify that the paper count and the machine count agree. Each of us can contact our member of Congress to insist that HR 550 be moved out of the House Administration Committee, where it has languished, for a floor vote. If the 2006 mid-term election results in a number of high profile, disputed outcomes, count on national attention to focus on this legislation.Write Comment (0 Comments) |

The SBE has announced that they will be giving a no-bid contract Freeman, Craft, McGregor Group, Inc. to test Maryland’s voting system for the latest round of security vulnerabilities that have been exposed regarding Diebold’s TSX machines. TrueVoteMD is concerned that the SBE has hired a firm that includes Paul Craft as a principal–rather than a firm that has been a critic of the system – or at least someone who has not shown a bias in favor of Diebold. The firm, Freeman, Craft, McGregor Group, Inc., was created by former Florida elections official Paul Craft. Mr. Craft who has been a professional apologist for the Diebold system since its initial contracts were signed by the State of Maryland -

$13 Million No-Bid “Sweetheart Deal” with Diebold
Draws Fire from Election Integrity Activists
Takoma Park, MD: The implementation of early voting and of the
federally mandated statewide voter registration database has been such
a headache that the administrators of elections in several Maryland
counties have recently resigned, including those in Prince Georges,
Anne Arundel and Wicomico Counties. Write Comment (1 Comments) |
